21.08.2010 Heikki opened hunting season in Sweden
Heikki started the hunting season with geese hunting in Kalmar in Sweden. This company arranged the hunt.
"Myöhemmin, niin luulen, metsäskelin siksi, että metsästyksen välityksellä pääsin koiraani lähemmäksi kuin millään muulla keinolla." Lainaus Yrjö Kokon kirjasta Molli, Maailman viisain koira.

It started to snow heavily already on sunday, but luckily during the days the weather was okay and we did have got an enjoyable hunting trip.
Heikki promised to shoot at least one pheasant cock, because he would needed it for fly tying. He kept his promise.
Metsänhoitajan A-litter is doing very well. During autumn I have heard news about pointing birds, retrieving ducks, small predator contacts and so on. And best of all, none of the puppies has had health problems.
In the beginning of october we did have got a litter meeting in Ylistaro Ostrobothnia. In Finland you will found the biggest fields and natural pheasant and partridge populations in Ostrobothnia.
Whenever there were a good wind, puppies did use it very well. It was also a pleasure to watch, how well the puppies manage to have strenghts to behave and wait for their own turn without whining during long day. The weekend was a big success, because every puppy did have a bird contact with a point.
Dogs worked excellent on saturday in South-Carelia. Both Enne and Ruska participated on continental pointing dogs water trial. Enne got full points from open class water work and Ruska got full points both from winner class water work and tracking (tracking is included only in winner class).
I´m using this kind of ball flinger and tennis balls to train the dogs to go to exact directions.
We travelled to Ostrobothnia in the end of november to hunt pheasants. The hunting trip went well and especially Enne worked well.
Now the everyday life has started and our holidays has ended. But hunting continues. Heikki has started elk hunting, but last week he was in Lieksa in grouse hunting with his friend. Although they didn´t get any game, Ruska offered them quite an experience. They were walking headwind, when Ruska pointed for a moment. Heikki and his friend had short time to think, that dog found birds, but suddenly Ruska speeded forward. In front of her were a wolverine. The dog chased the wolverine to a tree. And everything happened about 50 metres distance from Heikki and her friend.
I wish i had seen something as special as that. The Finnish Game and Fishery Research Institute has calculated that in Finland lives about 150-170 wolverines. So it´s quite unlikely, that something like that happens again. Eventhough we live in North-Carelia.
Ruska stayed under the tree were the wolverine were, but came away after Heikki told her to come. And as fast as the wolverine went up, it came down and disappeared to forest. I did know about Ruskas harshness towards small predators, but seems like the predator can be also a bit bigger.
Woodcock was our first game bag when hunting season for grouse started. I did have to take a photo of the woodcock at home, because it was the first one I have ever shooted and it was also Ruska´s first woodcock. We did found some lonely grouse also, but unfortunately we didn´t get any good situations with them.
Our four days hunting trip to Jokkmokk in Sweden went well besides very low willow grouse population in the area. There were some isolated black grouses and capercaillies which were chicken-hearted and they started to fly when I was approaching the pointing dog. So, no bag from that hunting trip. On wednesday the hunting season for grouse begins in Finland.
We have started the hunting season with water fowl hunting.
